The Story Behind This Blend

Uganda is the birthplace of Coffea canephora—more commonly known as Robusta. For generations, the fertile lowlands surrounding Lake Victoria and the western slopes of Mount Elgon have produced some of the world’s most robust coffee varieties. Yet Robusta has long been dismissed by specialty coffee as inferior to its Arabica cousin.

We believe that is a misunderstanding born of poor processing and careless sourcing.

The Robusta Uganda Blend is our tribute to Uganda’s coffee heritage. We combine the best of both worlds: the intense body and caffeine punch of premium Ugandan Robusta with the nuanced sweetness of our single-origin Mt. Elgon Arabica.

The result is a coffee that honors tradition while defying expectations—a dark, velvety brew with a surprising complexity.

What Makes Our Robusta Different

Not all Robusta is created equal. The Robusta used in mass-market products is often sun-dried on bare ground, harvested indiscriminately, and sold as a low-cost filler. Our Robusta tells a different story.

We source our Robusta from smallholder farmers in the Mubende and Kayunga districts, where the red volcanic soils and consistent rainfall produce Robusta cherries with higher sugar content than is typical. These farmers—many of whom are also members of our Mt. Elgon network—use the same selective hand-picking and raised-bed drying methods we require for our Arabica lots.

This attention to quality yields a Robusta that is:

We then blend this premium Robusta with our signature Mt. Elgon Arabica—specifically the Bugisu Dark Roast profile—to create a blend that balances power with elegance.

Why Choose Robusta?

For much of the specialty coffee world, “100% Arabica” has been a badge of honor. But in Uganda and across much of Africa, Robusta has always been the coffee of the people—the strong, dark brew served at roadside stalls, the foundation of traditional coffee ceremonies, and the engine of the country’s coffee economy.

The Robusta Uganda Blend is our way of reclaiming that heritage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is Robusta lower quality than Arabica?
A: Not inherently. Mass-market Robusta has earned a poor reputation due to poor farming and processing practices. Our Robusta is selectively harvested, carefully processed, and blended to highlight its strengths—body, crema, and caffeine—while minimizing any harshness.

Q: How much caffeine is in this blend?
A: Robusta beans naturally contain approximately twice the caffeine of Arabica beans. This blend, being approximately 40% premium Robusta, offers roughly 40–50% more caffeine than a standard Arabica coffee.

Q: Can I use this for espresso?
A: Absolutely. This blend is specifically designed to perform well as espresso. The Robusta content produces an exceptionally thick, long-lasting crema, while the Mt. Elgon Arabica adds complexity and sweetness.

Q: Is this blend single origin?
A: This is our only blend. It combines two Ugandan origins—Mt. Elgon Arabica and Mubende/Kayunga Robusta—to create a coffee that represents the full diversity of Uganda’s coffee landscape.
